Exhausted!

As I approach the two week mark, I am physically exhausted. I am worn out!  Living on nothing but liquids has brought about a tremendous weight loss (about 47 lbs. so far), but at a real cost. I am really struggling just to get through the day without a nap.

On Friday last week, I was feeling so well that I went to our local school track and walked about 2 miles. After that, my energy just went downhill and I haven’t been able to get it back.

I have four more days until I see the doctor and move into phase two (pureed foods). I can’t wait. Liquids are getting difficult to swallow – not physically, I’m just tired of them. Still glad I did it though!  Having the weight off is wonderful. I am able to move better and sleep better. Can’t wait to see the results after the four weeks of modified diet! My goal is 70 pounds off.

===================================================

People ask me if I’m hungry. The answer is YES on a psychological level. I see a commercial for a McDonald’s Quarter Pounder and I would LOVE one, but I know that it’s in my head. My stomach couldn’t handle a McDonald’s hamburger, let aalone a Quarter Pounder. I have to revise my hungers and amounts I eat.

Physically, I’m not really that hungry except when I wake up in the morning. Until I get that first glass of water in me, my stomach rumbles.

Another Overweight Slob

I am pleased to announce to the world that I managed to achieve my 2009 weight loss goal 4 weeks ahead of schedule.  I am also proud to announce that I am no longer considered an obese American.  I am now just another overweight slob like most other people.

As you can see from the photo evidence below, I have managed to trim the big belly bulge off. I reduced my overall body mass to below 30, but it is most noticeable from the waist. If you have never been obese or struggled with weight issues, this is probably no big deal, but if you have ever been seriously overweight and have tried to lose that weight, you may know what I have gone through.

To be perfectly honest, I am ashamed to admit exactly how fat I got and why I got like that. I hope to reveal full details at a later date, but for now I will tell you this – SO FAR I have lost over 10 inches of fat around my waist.  The photo below shows the pair of pants that used to fit snuggly around my big fat belly and the pile of clothes on the table are some of my fat clothes that no longer fit.

I am still far from being skinny, but I have learned a few things to help make me healthier so I will continue working on it.  If you need or would like any help with diet, weight loss, nutrition, exercise, or anything else, please let me know.  I am here to help.

Playing some catch up...

- Soccer season started today…the first loss of my son’s career went along with it. I dont want to complain, but the ref was a parent from the other team, and he was coaching from the field. he also did not call any… I mean ANY bad throw-ins against the other team…there were about 5 by my count. he also did not know the lay out or the penalty box leaving each goalie to handle the ball in the smaller goalie box. at least he was fair on that account. My team had a bye today. next week we play a team with at solid coach that I respect…I hope to wipe up the field next saturday afternoon

- The interior of the house is finally done.really it only took two years. in that time we painted the house, tiled a couple of floors, removed the popcorn texture from the ceilings, put down laminate and. this was the long list. there is still a few other things we want to get done, but they are one day projects. next in line the exterior of the house. fresh paint, some new landscaping….things like that.

- School is in…for about three weeks now. the girls are settling into the new campus, and my son has made the adjustment to going all day long in first grade. I havent done anything in the garden yet, but with hopefully cooler weather ahead, we’ll get some winter veggies in the ground in the near future.

- Feeding the hungry. the school changed lunch suppliers this year. the jury is still out on this company. the food..although it is supposed to be good for you doesnt taste good to you. my kids are not crazy about the new menu. with the change, the free and reduced lunch option for low income families was tossed out the window. the principal said tha it would cost between $25 and $30 thousand a year to keep this option going. for this the School council stepped in and bought makings for sandwiches and other snacks for the kids that dont have a healthy lunch to eat. the only requirement is that the kids are hungry.

- New computer: I’m liking the new laptop. I think i’ve gotten used to the new keyboard but not the mouse. I think we need to get a wireless setup for mousing. it’s the HP artist Edition loaded with music editing/composing along with several Corel programs. I reloaded the desktop computer and set it up in the girls room…no internet, but plenty of homework opportunities.

- I applied for two jos this week. the first at Carls Jr on a wim. I happened to be getting lunch at the time…the other at a home center that is not either on the big two national chains. I applied for a lumber handling  job. something that I spent many years doing at the conglomerate guitar company.

-  I stopped loosing weight. Honestly, I having been trying at it the last few weeks. I’ve still cut out the sugar and soda, but  I’ve been atttending parties and get togethers where I’ve partaken a little more than I should have….Tomorrow is a new day. current weight… 200 lbs

- I’ m playing in a band now. I auditioned last week, and I guess they liked me. Palying rhythm is the place where i’m comfortable, and I seemed to fit in just fine. I think my overall feel is a little harder thn the rest ofthe band, but I can tone it down a little. the band “Remedy 4 Life” is a n outreach that started at Sonrise church in Santee. you can read more about the band here.

9.5 lbs gone in four weeks

I would have made it to 10 lbs. gone if it wasn’t for my daughter and her friend Debbie. They took me out for dinner last night to Dada’s. It is one of my favorite Delray Beach resturants. I’ll tell you what happened and you can tell me how well you think I handled the situation.

(1)   Baked brie appetizer: This was incredibly delicious. As you can see, the brie came with both fruit and bread. I chose the apple slices and put the tiniest taste of the brie on top. Mmmmm. Heaven. I ate about three of these and then STOPPED! Now, those of you who know me and have shared meals with me understand the incredible change in my behavior that this represents. As a charter member of the “clean plate” society I usually can be counted on to eat every delightful tidbit of food placed in front of me. Afterwards, of course I beat up on myself for “having no control.”  This time I did exercise control and I can give myself credit for what I didn’t eat that I normally would have!

(2)   Filet mignon infused with thyme and garlic: I have not tasted beef since I started the 20 pound struggle 4 weeks ago. So this was quite a treat! Mouth-watering doesn’t even begin to describe what I ate last night. Please notice how much of the filet is left-over.  I would estimate at least half. But even more impressive is the fact that virtually ALL of the amazingly delicious garlic mashed potatoes survived the evening. Again, I think I deserve credit for showing incredible restraint under really difficult conditions.

Filet before

Filet after

(3)   Drinks, bread and dessert: No drinks, I had only water.  No bread. This was very hard for me because the homemade multi-grain loaf had obviously just come from the oven and was literally screaming to be slathered with butter. No dessert. No coffee.

I give myself a B+ because I think I did really well, even though I know that I strayed from my diet plan. I decided to enjoy a meal at a restaurant that was certainly not diet-friendly.  I don’t give myself an A, because I probably could have made some better menu choices. Yet, by restraining my consumption, I was able to conclude the evening without feeling like I was “bad.”

Do you agree? How would you rate my performance?  How would you have handled the situation?

Weigh-In News

Those of you who read this blog regularly know how much I’ve been struggling with my weight loss, despite following WW and working out on a regular basis, including with a personal trainer twice a week.

I was a bit concerned about what my weigh-in would show this week, because I’ve been sick.  It was some sort of weird flu-like illness that made me feel achy, nauseous, and really tired.  Plus I had a mild cough and a runny nose.  I went to workout on Tuesday, but Jimmy sent me home because he said “those are the rules.  You don’t workout when you’re sick. Just rest and get better and I’ll see you next week.”  I ended up doing 20 minutes on the stationary bike, because I figured that wasn’t too much effort, and maybe I could “sweat it out.”  Still, without really working out and with taking the cold/flu medication that seemed to dry me out, I wondered what I’d see on the scale.

Well, no reason at all to worry!  I lost 4.1 pounds since my last recorded weigh in a few weeks ago, for a total of 3.5 pounds lost since June 18! I don’t know why I haven’t recorded my weight for last week on the blog stats page, but I think this means I lost over 2 pounds this week.  In the interest of full disclosure, I should say that this is based on weighing myself on my home scale, in the morning, with only my underwear on.  For me, this seems to be the best weigh-in method.  It’s accurate, and I don’t have to worry about what I’m wearing or what I’ve ingested and how that affects the weigh in.  I did the same thing last week, so these results are substantial.

So, I’ve decided that my official weigh-ins are now going to be the ones that I do myself on my home scale.  It’s an expensive Conair/WW scale, so I’m confident in the results.  I felt such a wave of relief when I decided to use these results each week.  I always felt as if I was somehow “cheating” if I didn’t use the WW scale results as my official weight. But now I realize that’s just silly.  There is no reason not to feel that the results on my home scale aren’t just as valid as those on the WW scale.

Which is not to say that I’m not going to WW meetings anymore, because I am, but I’m not going to worry as much about what those weigh-ins show.  There are so many factors to consider with an evening weigh-in, and it was starting to become really destructive to my weight loss efforts.  So I’m not going to freak out if I show a gain on the WW scale from week to week, because I know that it could be as simple as eating more for lunch from one week to the next or having more water that day.  I love going to the meetings because of the support and the topics, and my leader is phenomenal.

Speaking of meetings, because of Back-to-School night this week, I couldn’t attend my usual Thursday evening meeting, so I went last night to a completely different center.  It was good, but definitely different.  It felt more corporate, somehow.  One reason is that the meeting place itself is bigger, and the atmosphere is colder.  The leader was fine, but she didn’t have that caring quality that Michelle, my Thursday leader, has.  It was important for me to go to a meeting, because I really do feel like the meetings help me “recharge” for the week, but I definitely know that the Thursday evening meeting at my regular center is the one for me.  That was a good thing to discover, as well.

So this has been a very crazy, hectic, and tiring week.  But it was a good week, too.  I’m so happy with the weight loss!

Did You Play Today?

The U.S. Dept of Health and Human Services and the Ad Council today launched a new series of PSAs designed to address childhood obesity. Featuring characters from the upcoming film Where the Wild Things Are, the PSAs are an extension of HHS’ Childhood Overweight and Obesity Prevention campaign with the Ad Council, which encourages children and families to lead healthy lifestyles.

These PSAs cost millions of dollars.

But do they work?

Will this PSA get your kid to put down the Wii controller and go outside and play?
