The Best Way To Fire Up Your Metabolism, Burn Fat Fast and; Developing Lasting Health

By Rob Poulos, Fat Loss & Fitness Expert & Creator of ‘Fat Burning Furnace’

Ask ten people what type of exercise they should be doing to burn fat and fire up their metabolism and they’ll all probably tell you the same thing.  They’ll tell you that you need to do 30-40 minutes of moderately-paced aerobic exercise on a treadmill, elliptical machine, stair climber, etc. for 3-5 times per week.

They’ll probably also tell you that more is better…4 times per week would be better than 3, and 5 times per week would be even better.

People will tell you this because that’s been and continues to be the mainstream recommendation for fat burning by many fitness professionals.  Get in a certain target heart rate and stay at that heart rate for 30 minutes or so, several times per week.  I am here to tell you there is a better way.

Sure, you’ll burn some calories while you’re running to nowhere on a treadmill, but you won’t make a complete physique transformation with this type of exercise alone.

In fact, this type of exercise can actually be counterproductive to burning fat.  Here are just a couple of reasons:

Long duration, lower intensity aerobics calls upon your stored body fat for energy during the sessions.  While this may sound good, this can actually cause your body to create more body fat in reserve after the workout is over to have ready for your next workout.  Yikes!

What’s worse, this type of exercise when done frequently as typically suggested, trains your cardiovascular system to be efficient.  Again, while this sounds good, your heart and lungs can actually reduce their capacity for work as they are getting more efficient at doing easy work (your long duration, low intensity aerobic workouts), which reduces their ability to handle stress.

This can lead to a host of other problems including higher change of heart attack.  You are only working within your current aerobic capacity because you’re never challenging it to go beyond what it’s capable of.   And anything that is easy will not yield results even close to what’s challenging for the body to accomplish.

Instead, you should be challenging the body to increase its capacity, so that it is stronger and able to deal with stress more easily.  How is this done?

The fastest and most efficient way to rev up your metabolism, burn fat faster, and develop lifelong health and fitness is to add lean muscle to your body through resistance training – period. You want life changing results in the quickest possible time? Get stronger and build some muscle. When you add lean muscle to your body you’ll be literally turning your body into a fat burning machine!

Let’s say that you were eating the amount of calories that allow you to maintain your current bodyweight, but began to add lean muscle to your body through proper resistance training…you’ll need to use some of those calories you’re eating to feed the new muscle, creating a calorie deficit in your body.

In addition, when you stimulate your body with proper resistance training like I teach my students, the repair and growth process will call upon your stored body fat for energy.  This calorie deficit combined with the repair and growth process will allow you to burn fat all day long, every day.  You’ll even get these fat burning effects when you’re sitting around doing nothing at all.

Also, properly conducted resistance training actually increases your heart and lung’s capacity for work.  By placing intense demands on your body, it is forced into being ready for anything you throw at it.  This makes you more resistant to cardiovascular health problems that plague most people…even those that exercise with aerobics frequently.

And the beauty is I’ve discovered that you don’t have to spend much time working out to get the fat loss effects, and strength and muscle gains that will create this environment…you can actually get it done with 2 or 3 weekly workouts that last between 20 and 30 minutes, and even less time at an advanced level.

And it’s easy to make this type of exercise part of your life because of its efficiency…and it will help keep you lean and healthy for the rest of it…muscle is the stuff that fat burning furnaces are made of!  That I can promise you.

Faith

I love music.  I think music has the ability to transport us back into time, and carry us into the future.  It can transform a mood from bad to good.  Music connects people together.

One of the songs we sang a couple of weeks ago at church was Chris Tomlin’s version of Amazing Grace (My Chains are Gone) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AXV6H…atch-main-area

I LOVE this song!

This is the Chorus: My chains are gone, I’ve been set free. My God my Savior, has ransomed me. And like a flood, His mercy rains, unending love, amazing grace.

As I was singing this, it occurred to me that the “chains” are my own personal love of food. (specifically unhealthy, sugary, fatty foods)

I am profoundly struck by how grateful I have felt over the past 4 weeks at being able to stay on track and how happy I have been to lose 15.5 pounds in the month of December.  I think I am going to start approaching this weight loss thing with some more intentional prayer and focus. It is suddenly so obvious to me.  First prayer would be that I can stay focused.

I also think that God talks to me all of the time.  He uses music, art, nature and other people to speak to us.  I just have to quiet myself and listen.  I tend to be bombarded with “signs” or “nudges” when I finally realize what it is that I am supposed to be looking for.

One of those nudges was the daily “Storypeople” email that I received a couple of weeks ago.

It reads: “This is a giant block of whatever is most difficult for you to carry & trust me on this, you’ll carry it more times than you can count until you decide that’s exactly what you want to do most & then it won’t weigh a thing anymore.”

My “giant block” is keeping my head in the weight loss game and not eating a lot of crap.

It really is quite simple.

a bit belated...

But better late than never:

So far it’s been good to me….relaxing day yesterday, Pilates this morning (shoulders still hurt), and spent tonight crying watching the Dr. Who finale (yes, I AM lame).

I’m going to miss the 3-day work weeks, it’s going to be hard to go back to having to work 5 days a week. ;)

And I must thank you folks again for the kind words on my last post. The constant barrage of diet & weight loss commercials had gotten to me – I’m feeling slightly better now.

Clearing and Pressing

I have many regrets regarding this blog.  It is not what I envisioned it to be.  I believe that is simply because I have not dedicated the necessary time.  I had so many things I wanted to document and share.  So much has happened in my life in the last 18 months.

I completed my journey through nursing school.  I was able to document some of my journey, but actually just scratched the surface.  There was so much more to tell, but I underestimated the amount of time school would require and how easy it was to bypass blogging so I could study or spend time with the boys.  It was an incredible time in my life.  I did things I never thought I would and now I’m on the road to having a fulfilling, meaningful CAREER!!!  I hope to be much better at chronicling the journey post nursing school.  Hopefully, it will help other nursing students out there or prompt advice from veteran nursing remembering their experiences of the first nursing job and trying to find a mentor, and struggling to remember why you wanted to become a nurse in the first place.

Pressing forward into the new year.  I have many challenges ahead.  First, the exciting journey of finding/beginning  my first nursing job.  Balancing my work schedule with that of my husbands and ensuring that I’m as available as possible to my boys.  My second major challenge is finally losing the weight I gained while pregnant with Elliott.  At the very least I want to return to my pre baby weight.  I worked so hard to get there and I need to get back there.  But I’m hoping I can break through that plateau and get to my ultimate goal, 25% or less body fat.  Don’t really care where that puts me numberwise on the scale, I just want to get to a healthy weight and lower my risk for diabetes.  It will also allow me to be a good example for my patients.  Third, I want to experience a spiritual revival.  I need to get back to my spiritual roots.  I have a solid faith foundation, but I am feeling the cobwebs of inattention.  I need to put Christ back into the center of my life.  I need to be a reflection of his love in every word and action.  The only way to do that is to be rooted deep in worship, His word, and prayer.

Time to clear away the regrets, the negative, and the ineffective of the past and press forward toward the future with hope, anticipation, and purpose.  If you never begin, you never reach the destination.  Here’s to the beginning!!

A new year, a new decade, a new resolve

2010.

That seems surreal to me.  When I think of where I was in my life in 2000, I have come a long way in a decade.  However, when I look at my life in 2009, I am surprised to notice a few things missing from it.  My spirituality.  My fitness.  My intellectual pursuits.   All have fallen by the wayside in the hectic flurry of changing jobs, changing cities, changing relationships.  In the midst of all the change that 2009 saw, I somehow forgot to recreate those things in my life that are so important to me.  On this New Year, I resolve the following things:

  • Reach and maintain my ideal weight
  • Journal 3 pages per day
  • Blog once per month
  • Meditate every day for at least 15 minutes
  • Do something spiritual at least once a week
  • Live my life in Pittsburgh – stop running away to other cities with every spare moment; build some relationships, friendships with people in Pittsburgh; do something new in this city at least once a month
  • Meet new people
  • Write more this year than last year
  • Reduce my outstanding debts (pay off credit cards)
  • Read at least one book a month

Days 1 and 2 of this year are going well.  I am eating better, exercising, and being more frugal.  Yesterday I journalled 3 pages, and I intend to do the same today.  I meditated yesterday and intend to today as well.  I’ve been reading more.

I resolve that this year will be different than the last on these things.  I will make the effort; I will strive to progress on these things.

And so it is.

Proactol is the best weight loss tablet on the market

A lot of weight loss supplements are available in the market but most of them prove to be ineffective.

Health care professionals generally agree that people that have a BMI of 30 or greater can improve the health through weight loss. It is especially true for people with a BMI of 40 or greater, that are considered extremely obese. A weight loss of 5 to 10 percent of the initial body weight can do much to improve health by lowering blood pressure and other risk factors for obesity-related diseases. The method of treatment depends on the level of obesity, and readiness to lose weight. Weight dominate is a life-long effort, and having realistic expectations about weight loss is an central consideration.

Resolved

I learned a valuable lesson in 2009. I persevered and lost 44 lbs. without exercise. I now feel stronger when it comes to accomplishing my goals this year. I still have around 25 lbs. to go, but I will get there. The last 25 lbs., though, is harder than the first 44.

I plan to write my second book in 2010 and read/listen to the New Testament every month. I also have several congregational goals, as well.

I also want to do a better job with my articles at Forthright. Your input is always appreciated on how I can improve.

For more about my resolutions, read here.
