I has been a while since I had a good sweat. Made up for it today. I arrived late (was in an impromptu meeting with a VP). Once I was there, they were already practicing overhead squats. I haven’t done those before. Neat exercise though. I started out just making sure I did the technique right. At first I did not have the tightening of the stomach muscles correct. Once I changed that, it made a major difference. I started out with just the bar, but continued to work up. Eventually I made it to 105#. I know I was at my limit because I tried to do 2 rounds and I started to lose control on the second and I had to toss the bar. It was a good bench mark. My knee didn’t give me any trouble which is very good.
The second part of the WOD was some sort of modified burpee, where you start by rolling on your back, jump and clap, then a regular burpee. I forgot what it was called, but we needed to do 40 of those. I think the trainer was a little generous in his counting (30, 32, 33, 36…) however to be fair, I lost count a couple of times too so it wouldn’t surprise me if I did too many anyway. After that I still wanted to do a little more. So a pulled up a corne where I would be out of the way and did 10 push ups and 20 sit ups. I did 3 rounds of those. I know I was pushing myself on the push ups because my arms were absolutely burning when I was finishing the last couple of push ups. ouch ouch Ouch!
Dinner consisted of 12 grapes and a glass of diet soda. YEE HAW – IF THAT AIN’T THE FOOD OF CHAMPIONS, I DON’T KWOW WHAT IS! However I had sushi at lunch and honestly, I am still full. I know I shouldn’t over eat, so what really are my options? Stuff myself just so I can get a balance? or not eat and let it burn off? I am opting for the latter for right now.
I started my liquid fast Sunday September the 27 at 5 p.m and ended it today Tuesday September the 29th at 5 p.m. I’ve always wanted to do a fast since I was interested in them during my research of fasting several years ago. I wish I had done it earlier. I feel great, energized and felt a great sense of accomplishment. I decided to give my digestive system a break, to let it rest. The weird thing about it for me was that I thought Tuesday morning I would be famished! I was not, in fact I was not hungry at all. I plan to do it again. I did not eat anything solid during my fasting period. I once had a doctor that I will call Dr. “T” who advised me to once a week I was to not eat anything that I could not get through a straw. Meaning for that day all my meals would be liquid. I did not take his advise but it stayed with me. Thank you Dr.”T”! I lost 3 lbs during my 48 hour fast though that was not my intention. I have a sense of well being. I will incorporate drinking my meals once a week. Here is the “Recipe”
1 Eggland egg
cinnamon ( I use a teaspoon, but whatever amount suits you)
8 oz of Hood Calorie Countdown Milk ( I get mine at Krogers)
2 scoops of whey protein ( I recommend this one)
1 tablespoon of olive oil
1 oz of GBG 10 in 1 liquid vitamins ( I just use this in the morning shake)
I drink one for every meal and as a snack also, basically it’s just a calorie reduction regiment for a day. I drink plenty of water during the day at least 64 ozs. As always consult your doctor about fasting before you try what I did, it may not be for you.
Well, you have got to love the new studies coming out. I have to agree with this article though. I do think that weight loss and healthy eating habits are essential to better over all health.

Soooo…I’m wondering if it would be violating my “rules” (see post “Ground Rules) by purchasing a scale. I don’t technically “need” it, but it could be very useful. I do actually have reasons for giving up shopping for a year, so I’ll lay them out and you can tell me (hopefully!) if I am “allowed” to buy a scale!
1) Because I want to feel “in control” of my spending!
I don’t want to ride the crazy train any more!! If you are a compulsive shopper then you know what I’m talking about! For example, although it feels amazing to buy something marked lower than its original price…I don’t think that the average person buys a sale item and then returns it and buys it again when it gets marked down further! And then if the price is further reduced you probably don’t again return the previously purchased item and buy it again at the lower, lower price..and so on…and so on. Or maybe you ARE like me! Can you hear that locomotive whistle blowing? ”Cooo! Cooo!” (Yes, the “h” is missing for a reason!)
2) I want to pay off my debt.
I don’t have a substantial amount of debt (although I’m sure my husband would disagree), but I do have a bad habit of paying down my Banana Republic credit card every month and then racking it back up to the limit. I like to use my card because for every dollar you spend you get points that add up to dollar rewards. Though I’m sure the interest I’m paying every month far exceeds the amount in rewards I’m earning, (most months anyway! ) I can only imagine how much money I’d have saved if didn’t do this!!!
3) I want to save money so that I can work less and possibly go back to school.
I am an American living in Sydney, Australia. I work as a Flight Attendant for an American charter company and my job keeps me away from home more than I’d like these days. It was easier before I became an expat, but now I’m ready to settle into my new life and begin a career that doesn’t involve being away so much. I’m leaning towards a career in holistic nutrition.
4) I would like to trade my shopping habits for healthier habits such as exercise and healthy eating.
Okay, so I’ve allowed myself to turn into a bit of a blob. I blame it on a few different things…my job mostly. And though it is true that my job makes healthy eating a challenge, I can’t blame my job entirely. Of course, I have only myself to blame for becoming so unfit!! It is TRULY embarassing! I hiked a mountain in Japan last week and an old woman with a cane kept passing me!!! Seriously!!! And she was laughing! :( Thankfully for my ego…I don’t speak Japanese, so I don’t know what she was saying to me as she passed!
Which brings us back to the beginning of this post. Obviously I need to get in shape other than just for vanity’s sake. But sadly…vanity motivates me most when it comes to excercise. (Yuck!) If I buy a scale, I can set a weight loss goal. I know some people say you shouldn’t weigh yourself. They say you should pay attention to how your clothes are fitting instead, so that you don’t become obsessed with the scale. But I honestly think I might be more motivated if I could measure my results with a number.
10:01pm This is the first time that I have actually tried to lose weight. I’m only 19, but I weigh 190 pounds (give or take a few). My family has a history of obesity, especially on my mom’s side and that’s where I got my body type from. I’ve always been a little chubby kid, but in high school I started to thin out once I started swimming competitively. I loved the way that I looked and felt then, but keeping that weight was the last thing on my mind after I stopped being on the team.
This is my second year in college and I am a Social Work major. One of the classes I’m taking is called Human Behavior in the Social Environment, and a project that we’re working on all semester is called the Micro Change Project. The point of the project is to pick something that we would like to change about ourselves (a micro system). In order to help someone else change, we must first change ourselves. The change I chose was weight loss. I would like to (no, scratch that…I WILL) lose 20 pounds before December 2nd.
I downloaded an app on my iPod called “Lose It”, which helps me to track the amount of calories I eat and also create a plan for how many calories I’m alloted per day based on my goal weight. This app also helps me track my exercise, and deducts it from the calories I’ve eaten and lets me know how many I have left for the day. I really like this app, but it’s really hard to find all of the foods that I eat and I honestly don’t think I’m very accurate on my guesses of the proportions I’m eating. At first I was excited because I was losing some weight, but then I would fluctuate 5 pounds in either direction and I would get disappointed and just want to eat whatever I wanted or sit on my ass all day.
I would like to get a better understanding of what’s REALLY good for me (and my waistline) and what kinds of exercises I can do to get results relatively quickly so I don’t lose my motivation. Like my mom always tells me, I have the patience of a gnat and I just want to see results…even if they’re just little ones! I also would like to learn what I can do to WANT to go out there and get exercise every day instead of a couple times a week going to the pool and then the other days of the week just sitting around not doing anything. This is going to be a very big challenge for me, but I hope that once I start seeing results on the scale and on my body I will be superextra motivated to keep losing after the first 20
Today: 3/4 package of chicken flavored ramen noodles
2 Handfulls of Sweet Hawaiian Onion kettle cooked potato chips
1 chicken quesidilla
-about 4oz. chicken breast w/ taco seasoning
-about 1/4 cup(maybe less) mozzarella cheese
-1 flour tortilla
Small chicken alfredo microwave snack (360 calories)
3/4 cup granola cereal
Weight-190lbs.
I’m still working on a plan for my weight loss…but in the meantime I think I’ll go to the pool tomorrow and swim 500 yards(with a reward of sitting in the hot tub after of course).
After a great weekend, I’ve vowed to make this week a huge success. The family and I took a little day trip and did some walking. I did have one slip up with food, however. I forgot to bring some snacks so I was super hungry by the time we got to Arby’s.
I’m starting to find out that my biggest issue is going to be with snacking at night. I think I’ve figured out some ways to control that. I bought string cheese and baby carrots to snack on. I figure you can’t go wrong with veggies and protein so those are going to be my snacks.
I’ve printed out some food diary pages from Microsoft Office so that I can keep track of what I eat during the day. It’s easier for me to write it all down during the day because I don’t have much time to add it all to SP.
My work schedule is crazy right now due to the launch of several marketing campaigns and a new service. As a result, I’m always in front of my computer, including for lunch. However, I’m going to work hard to change that. My 5 year old gets off the bus at noon so we’re going to start eating lunch together. We usually eat lunch together, in the same room, but not actually together.
During our ride on our day trip yesterday, I took my cooking light cookbook with me. While enjoying the ride and thumbing through the cookbook, I had a revelation. It’s something I’ve always known but never really put much stock into it. I realized that I have to take care of myself.
Our trip was very successful in more ways than one. My husband is so supportive. I’m so lucky to have such a wonderful family. So now it’s time for me to get myself in gear so I can make myself and my family proud.
Completed half of a half-marathon on Saturday. Well, about half. Did 6.35 miles (actual half of a half marathon would be 6.55 miles). Completed in 1:10 (hour and ten minutes). I felt pretty strong. You can see my 6.4 mile run on RunKeeper here: http://bit.ly/23X2m
I certainly have the lung and heart power to complete the run, it’s just a question of taking care of my feet. Therefore, I have started a program in which after a long run, I will take some time off to preserve my feet and avoid injury. So today, Sunday, had a lighter day. Did some stretching, boxing, and weight lifting. Tomorrow will do spinning (cycling class). Great cardio workout without (much) impact.
For some time now I’ve been following Joseph Delaney’s blog at Moving Through Life. Joseph doesn’t claim to be a writer. He describes himself as “an ordinary Christian” offering his perspective on life. A while back he announced he was leaving his blog. Then, on September 16th he suddenly reappeared.
In his words:
“When I left the blog I really had no intention of coming back.
My career was stressing me out. My health I was unsure about (cleared that up). My overall well being I just was not happy with.
All in all I needed to step away from some things so that I could clear up some craziness in my life.
The step away was really good.
I have come up with some new ideas about what I want/need to do in a couple areas. Since a lot of it is a bit too personal I will keep much of it to myself, but lets just go with the idea that they are good changes.
Here is what I will share:
Friday I will be rolling out Pledging for Weight Loss. A plan for me to lose some weight while raising some money for others… complete details on Friday. I think this is cool even if I stole the idea from someone else (hey, theft is a great form of flattery, eh?) (or should I go with great minds think alike?)”
And, that’s what he’s done. On September 18th he went public, announcing his current weight and his commitment to a serious exercise and diet regime for the next three months. Now as someone who has spent a lifetime battling my weight I know how easily that initial determination can wane without support. He has the added incentive of knowing his success will also benefit two other worthwhile causes but a little extra inspiration can’t hurt.
So if you’re inclined, please click on over to Joseph’s blog and offer a word of encouragement… maybe even a pledge or two. Let him know you’ll be checking in on his progress periodically. You can tell him Careann sent you.
Exercise that involves thinking increases brain activity, leading to a better executive function
Dear Friends
We had really good news this last weekend since NY Times published in their Magazine page 24: “Can Exercise make us smarter?”. According to the New York Times: “Allow a laboratory mouse to run as much as it likes, and its brainpower improves. Force it to run harder than it otherwise might, and its thinking improves even more. This is the finding of an experiment led by researchers at National Cheng Kung University in Taiwan and placed online in May.”.
Note: We can say the same argument with strength training “is not the same doing a simple bicep curl that doing a bicep curl with balance (MGW)
Do you want to see how the brain works when you exercise?Have you seen my latest update medical animation for Super Body, Super Brain?http://superbodysuperbrain.com
This is the original NY Times article http://well.blogs.nytimes.com/ 2009/09/16/what-sort-of- exercise-can-make-you-smarter/ ?emc=eta1
That is exactly the most important argument of the Upcoming Book (April 27th 2010) “Super Body, Super Brain” and the scientists that I interviewed for the book: ” if you force your brain to think while doing a strength training movement, more brain activity will be required and the connections will get stronger and may turn that will help us get smarter (same as the article says)”. This article will be published and online in May same time the book will be released. This is great!
Also wanted to share the updated version of the medical animation: You can find it attached or in my blog http://superbodysuperbrainblog.wordpress.com
The key to burning calories and assisting you in getting a great nights sleep is to
eat the right foods.
Nothing more, nothing less -this is the answer.
Try this:
Weigh yourself and divide your bodyweight by 10 – That’s how many grams of protein
you need to eat. So, if you weigh 150 pounds, you need to eat 15 grams of protein.
Turkey:
Yep, I want you to eat turkey – proper, healthy turkey though and definately not deli-style
sliced turkey. Get on down to your local supermarket and ask the butcher to carve up
some real healthy non-processed white meat turkey breast.
So why should you be eating turkey?
Well’ I’ll tell you – it has HUGE protein content and it’s very low in fat, and it also has a lot of
tryptophan in it. Tryptophan helps you sleep and it is responsible for greater growth hormone
secretion.
This means that you will burn more body fat at night.
If you are really serious about losing weight and getting in shape then you need to eat…
Celery!
Just eat one celery stick for every 75 pounds of your weight. You will burn more calories
digesting it than what the celery stick contains.
This means that you will be consuming a meal that’s lower in calories, high in fibre, and
excellent for burning fat at night.
All you have to do is eat this meal about 2-3 hours before you go to bed.
You can drink water or eat more celery during that time if you wish to do so.
Give this a go for one week and see what happens!
Your fat bits will soon disappear….as if by magic!
Til next time.
Train strong.

Sorry I have missed a day or so, I went home to visit my family for the weekend and got caught up in the emotions of it all. I’m happy to report that within the past 2 days I have kept down a total of 2 meals, which is actually an accomplishment if you go by my standards. It was amazing, I actually cried because I was so proud of myself. The first meal was this delicious prime rib and baked potato from my favorite steakhouse, it seemed a shame to waste all the money my father spent on it, and the second was donuts I had this morning, those were just too delicious to not keep in my stomach. It was really hard, and it took a lot of water to wash it all down and keep it down but all in all I’m happy I did it. That didn’t keep me from looking in the mirror just recently though, sadly, none of my other meals made the cut yet again. But, when I started to think about my body I made a jump for my MacBook to write some more to keep my mind off of it.
I have decided that from now on whenever I look into the mirror I will tell myself that I am beautiful, and that I don’t need this to be that way. It’s hard though, to look at yourself and see a picture that no one else does. I was looking at some photographs taken by some of my more artistic friends and I see such a small girl, but when I look in the mirror I don’t see that at all. I wish I could understand what that’s all about…how can I see one person, but everyone else see another? I just knew if I could see this skinny girl I would feel better, get better, love myself more. I weighed myself today, and it only feeds the fire, 109 pounds. My mom says I look sick. I’m only afraid that it will be harder to stay in control when I leave tomorrow.
After five weeks of steady weight loss the ball has stopped rolling downhill and has come to rest yards from the hole. I can see that flag. I am lining up my shot. Will it just take one more putt? One more push to get me to my goal? Or will it be a series of smaller steps that will get me there?
At this morning’s weigh-in I discovered that my weight was UP a half a pound for the week. Let’s look at the bright side. That means 10.5 lbs GONE in 6 weeks!!!!
What have I learned from my experience?
Old habits die hard. I can still remember those wonderful family dinners when I was a child. I remember my aunts and uncles and cousins all gathered around our dining room table. I would help my mother with preparations a week ahead of time. Mama made her own dough and then created the most wonderful breads, rolls and coffee cakes from it. We made chicken soup. It was my job to add the vegetables. We had a big roast turkey, sweet potato pie (often topped with iddy-biddy marshmallows), stuffing, noodle kugel, green beans slathered in margarine, and an array of desserts that was truly overwhelming. My mother served all this with pride and was hurt if anyone rejected what was put in front of them. Her greatest pleasure, I think, was to sit at the table after everyone else was served and survey the faces heartily eating. “What! You don’t like the stuffing?” she might say. “You’ve hardly eaten a bite of it!”
Re-training myself to hold back when food is offered with love is challenging for me. My entire life trained me to show and accept love by eating the food my mother prepared. After a lifetime of equating love and food consumption it is difficult to look at a meal as JUST nutrition for my body.
YET. Times have changed. My parents together with all the aunts and uncles are no longer with us. The cousins are rarely seen. But the feelings persist, even when it is my daughter, not my mother preparing the feast. Learning to look at food from a different perspective requires patience and persistence.
Considering what I would have eaten if I were not on my 20 pound struggle, perhaps I can take comfort in the fact that, despite some overindulgence, I am back on track and have only 9.5 more pounds to lose to meet my goal.
New Discovery to Lose Weight for 5 Bucks Without Exercise
Do you want to lose ten, 20, or maybe fifty pounds for less than $5.00? If you join one of those expensive, weight reduction programs, it can set you back rather a lot, plus, you have to buy their expensively priced food. But now, due to a discovery by a mother from New Jersey, you can lose fifty pounds or more for under $5.00.
She discovered this trick by combining two separate free trials online from MaxAcai Boost and Colotrim. For an investment of just a few bucks for shipping, she discovered a fantastic weight loss process that rivals what you would expect to get from those expensive weight loss programs. And her cost was about one/a hundred of what she’d have paid to those other programs!
The trick is that she used 2 trial offers from the web that cost her less than $5 bucks for shipping.
Her story begins as she was watching Rachael Ray. On the program, the guest was Dr. Perricone, a professor of surgery at Michigan State University’s}’s College of Human medicine. He was debating about the amazing health benefits of the Amazon Acai berry. It sounded great, but she just didn’t have the $30 or $40 dollars for a weight loss product.
The following day, while watching a PBS program, she again saw Dr. Perricone. On this program, he was talking about another intensely effective way of losing weight. He explained that there are years of decaying food and junk found in our colons. And to complicate matters, this accumulated junk stops you from losing pounds and it traps other poisons in the colon. He then went on to explain how cleaning your colon can have major health benefits and is a great healthy way lose excess weight.
So, because she needed to lose about fifty pounds, she performed some research on the fantastic products that Rachael Ray and Dr. Perricone spoke about. Typically, these products are offered separately by different corporations. But, she came up with the idea to combine these 2 techniques. She just wanted to get a way to test them without spending lots of cash.
She searched for one or two days until she ultimately discovered two great products to test that had FREE trials. The two products she tested were MaxAcai Boost and Colotrim. Here is how she combined them so effectively to simply lose 47 pounds:
Step one – MaxAcai Boost is the 1st and most crucial part of the routine. MaxAcai Boost works to :
Super boost your energy by providing more health benefits and nutrients than any other food on the planet. Completely eliminate hunger pains. You simply do not feel hungry, ever! Stabilises your metabolic rate. Revitalizes skin cells. So when you shed the pounds your skin does not look saggy and stretched out. It also tightens the skin around your neck and face. Basically, it tones and tightens the skin throughout your body. You just look younger, and feel great!
Step 2 – Colotrim is the second significant step in the routine. While MaxAcai Boost gives you energy, revitalizes your cells helping suppress your hunger, the Colotrim :
Removes amassed sludge from the walls of your colon. Once the walls of your colon are cleaned, it allows your body to get rid of excess blubber by easily dumping it through the cleaned out colon. It is astounding. And because your colon is clean, your body is better able to soak up the MaxAcai Boost more efficiently. This permits even more fat and poisons to be eliminated through the colon, including toxins built up in the liver, gal bladder, and pancreas. The process becomes a healthy, refreshing cycle that keeps benefiting your body time after time.
This easy two step process will drop pounds of retained water and fat, tighten your skin, make you feel and appear 10-15 years younger, boost your energy, and elevate your mood to make you feel great.
Her tiny experiment turned into a powerful discovery. Her results were incredibly better than she had imagined. In fact, it looked as good, or better, than what she’d have predicted by trying those costly weight loss programs. And when you allow for that it cost her one / hundredth of the price, she was happier than sh had been in years.
Get the details on this extraordinary weight reduction discovery, in fact , it’ll only cost a few bucks! Get further information and the links to both free trial products at New Weight Loss Discovery!
I’m not a yogi and I haven’t practiced yoga in many years. Looking back on my “yoga career” I remember endless sun salutations and hating each and every one. I remember being really good at warrior and not so good at tree pose. There is one position that I remember fondly, that pose is the child’s resting pose(also known as child’s pose, balasana and supta vajrasana.) I supposed I like it because it was easy and I didn’t have to do a thing.
The thing with child’s pose is that it makes appearances in many non- yoga workouts. I’ve seen it thrown into everything from pilates to jazzercise and even incorporated into stretch/rest periods between traditional weight sets and circuit training sets.
Child’s pose is generally a relaxation pose but can benefit the practitioner is several ways including:
Pain relief in the back and neck
Lengthening of the spine
Stretches the ankles, shins, thighs and hips in a gentle manner
As I stated above, the pose is easy to do and involves kneeling with toes touching. Your knees may be spread hip width apart. Simply fold over and rest your chest on your legs or if your knees are spread allow your chest to fall between your knees. Stretch your head forward toward the ground. Your arms can be stretched in front of your head or can be stretched back towards the feet. Now relax. Breathe. When you’ve completed the rest cycle come out of child’s pose slowly and with a straight spine.
Exercise and healthy food will always be the number 1 solution if you want to lose weight or just live a healthy life. But it can be very difficult to keep yourself up on the weight loss goal and count calories in everything you eat to figure out if it is okay.
Here are 10 simple weight loss tips to make it easier for you to keep up the good work.
1.Do not leave out any meals.
You do not lose weight by leaving out meals and starve yourself. When you do not eat any food a half day, you will burn less calories and that is exactly not what you wish for.
Eat 5-6 meals between morning and late night every day to make sure your body has something to work with.
2.Straighten your back
Do not sit a chair like a bag of beans when you eat. That will slow your feeling of being full. Instead straighten your back and swallow your food properly to the stomach without problems.
3.Take your time.
It takes about 20 minutes from the stomach is full before the brain registers that you are full. Do not eat more food than you think your stomach can contain.
4.Dress for dinner
It is a very bad idea to wear tracksuit at dinner. The stomach will spill out automatically when you eat. Keep on your jeans to feel when you have had enough to eat – even when you are home alone.
5.Enjoy the sun.
If you have a tendency to eat extra when you are in a bad mood, try to get some more sun and light. Electric light and sunlight activates the part of your brain that influences your mood. Go for a long walk in the sun when you are feeling sad and want to eat comfort food.
6. Eat nuts.
Eat nuts instead of candy and chocolate, when you feel for something extra. It is truth that nuts contain fat but not even close to how much fat there is in all the sugared snacks you find at the grocery shelf.
7. Spice up your life.
Let spices like turmeric, cayenne pepper, chili, ginger and garlic be added to your daily meals. The spices turn on your metabolism and helps you burn more fat.
Tests shows that people who eat spicy food burns about 45 calories more per meal than people who do not eat spicy food.
8. Soup as starter
Cook a light soup to start the meal. It satisfy you a little and makes you eat less of the main course.
9. Drink water.
Drink 2 glasses of water ½ hour before a main meal and you will feel full faster.
10. Smile to the world.
If you laugh 15 min, you will burn 40 calories a day and that makes up pretty fast in a week, a month and year. Besides that is the most fun way to lose weight.
If you feel it is not easy for you to follow a diet plan or leave out the steak then these 10 tips can help you get on the right track of losing weight without too much suffering.

Many of you have tried and failed at weight loss or many of you have lost weight just to gain it back in a few months o for some of you in a few years. You are not alone in your struggle – I too have had the same battle. All my life I have gone up and down with my weight – WHY? because I LOVE FOOD!!! As Wendy Williams says, “I’m a foody!” BUT am I really a “foody” OR is this something that I have convinced myself that I am. Is my mind playing tricks on me? Because in the end, my body only needs but so much food – it’s my mind that tells me otherwise. Therefore, I have come to the conclusion that the hardest part about weight loss IS NOT actually losing the weight or the work one has to put into it because we all have or work hard at different things - it’s REALLY the MINDSET one may have with regard to what they eat or why they eat and also their lack of MENTAL focus when it comes to exercise.
There are plenty of weight loss programs out there to help you and I suggest you choose the right one for you. This blog we will examine many of the different weight loss programs and products to help you make right decision concerning your weight loss. SOON I will via video take you through my process of weight loss and maintenance and perhaps I can also help you with setting up a program as you watch and witness me lose weight.
We will also examine the facts and myths about weight loss and most importantly we will encourage one another through this process. In the end, it is something that one has to work on for LIFE - but once you have MENTALLY comitted to weight loss and make a DECISION for yourself - you have already won 90% of the battle. The other 10% will simply take a PHYSICAL commitment.
Well, let’s go AND let ME help YOU become a WEIGHT LOSS CHAMPION!!!
Exercise is only half of the equation; what you eat is the other half. Your attitude towards food can either make or break your weight loss regime. Follow these simple rules to lose unwanted fat.
The Way to Eat
Eat Monounsaturated fats (MUFAs for short) come from the healthy oils found in plant foods such as olives, nuts, and avocado. Include a MUFA at every meal. Incorporate a serving of one MUFA-rich food every time you eat.
Have a clear calorie goal. Consume four 400-calorie meals a day. Significant weight loss requires calorie control. For the average woman, 1,600 calories per day is ideal because it’s low enough to create weight loss while maintaining energy and preserving calorie-burning muscle.
The Way to Think
Manage stress. This emotion causes a spike in the hunger-stimulating hormone cortisol, sending you straight for the sweets. And when cortisol is high, extra calories are deposited directly as belly fat.
Ask for help. Among people who have permanent weight loss, 70% reported having strong social support, compared with only 38% of those who lost and regained weight. Recruit others to join you (or encourage you), or sign up for an online support group.
Beat emotional eating -keep a food diary, but don’t just record what and how much you eat. Journaling about your feelings can help you identify what triggers you to eat and why, so you can break unhealthy habits for good.

Hello, I have a name but I prefer to be anonymous, you can call me American Girl. To sum it up, I’m an 18 year old freshman in college, and I’m afraid for myself.
If you’re reading this, you’re probably pondering the thought of why I have started such a blog with such a distinct name. Maybe you’re just like me, and you’re struggling to realize your condition, or perhaps you want to understand it because someone you know and love is suffering from bulimia. If that’s the truth, I want you to know that it is a disease, it’s not a hook for the attention fish. I am constantly afraid of what will happen to me, but that doesn’t stop me after a meal has settled it’s place.
In an effort for your understanding I will explain what I looked like five months ago, and what I look like at present. Five months ago I was 5′7, 160 pounds, a size 8 in jeans, with long, straight, thick red hair that fell to my mid waist, and beautiful white teeth. Doesn’t sound all that bad, does it? I am now still 5′7, but 107 pounds, a size 2 in jeans, with long, straight, less-thick red hair that falls to my waist, and almost white teeth. Do I blame bulimia on all of this? No, I blame myself for letting my bulimia steal all of this. This is my fault, I’m not looking to blame anyone. I hated my body, so I changed it, and I changed it the completely wrong way. When posed with the question of work out and eat healthy or eat whatever you want and shove a finger down your throat, I took the easy route. The first 10 pounds and you feel fantastic because you’re losing weight and you can see it, the second 10 pounds and you still feel great but the tiredness is starting from lack of nutrition, the third 10 pounds and you’re triumphant again because you’ve lost 30 pounds! You’ve lost 30 pounds in 7 weeks, something Jenny Craig could never promise you. By the time I had lost 50 pounds, it had been five months, and you think to yourself that you should be happy, because girls out there would die for your body and guys would die to be with it. But deep down you know that you’re killing yourself every time you get up, because it’s been 3 hours and if you don’t puke now then you’ll actually digest something for a change. You begin to go through tubes of concealer like they’re candy, you learn to sew in order to fix your clothes at a minutes notice incase you dropped 2 pounds the day before, your beautiful hair slips through your fingers onto the shower floor until you could almost make a rug when you clean your drain a month later. But, all it takes for motivation is one glance from a guy, a roll of a girls eyes, or the reflection in a mirror. Our minds are obsessed with perfection, and when you’re bulimic you feel as if you’re close to that.
So why stop now? Why start blogging and writing about it? Well, you see, today I couldn’t keep down my normal nutri-grain bar, in fact, I couldn’t keep anything down. I’ve realized that the vomiting is becoming involuntary, I can’t control myself anymore. I’m frightened. And whenever I was scared when I was younger, whether it was a monster or the boogie man, if I was afraid and I wrote it made the fear go away.
I don’t believe I can make bulimia go away without serious help, but I’m not ready to turn to that. I believe that if I set my mind to something, I can fix it and that’s what I intend to do, fix myself, cure this disease that I’m virtually killing myself with.
So what will this blog be about, you ask? My day to day, I plan on stating at the bottom of every post a progress update, like, meals kept down or weight gained/lost. So come along on my journey back to health, and maybe heal yourself a little too.
Why isn’t anyone doing an intervention with this woman? It is clear to me that she may have an eating disorder. Just take a look at these pictures which were snapped of Posh this week in London.
Uh, that bony back frightens me even more than her back tatoo. Posh is 35-year-old woman and has the body of a sixth grade girl in my opinion.
This former Spice Girl was in London celebrating the 25 Years of London Fashion Week. Posh, there is nothing fashionable about having a possible eating disorder. Showing off this thin of a body just scares people. I’m thinking you’d be more comfortable walking along the Ghosts and Gas Lamps Tour that begins in Trafalgar Square most nights. Thin, pale and sickly looking people never should wear white after 6pm.
I’m frightened by this pics, and even more frightened by reports that she is working out up to five times per day, trying to lose excess skin. Hello, can you see she is looking more and more like Skeletor (Well, at least in the face) every day?
FYI – Back in the 1920’s, the definition of Posh was - Interjection (used as an exclamation of contempt or disgust.) I see this meaning making a comeback soon after getting a look at these pics.
People, even though I am making some jokes here, I truly believe that woman as skinny as Mrs. Beckham are not attractive. To me, a woman should have curves and look healthy, and have a body. Even though I was a size three/four back in the old days, it was only because I was starving due to poverty as I grew up on welfare. I hid my body under baggy clothing because it embarrassed me to show it off. I realize some people are naturally skinny, and some natrually not skinny, and I’m not criticizing those who do have trouble gaining or losing weight. I’m just saying I’ve seen old pics of Posh and can see how much better she looked with more weight on her frame. I just personally feel a size six is the skinnest a person should ever go. What do you think? What is your ideal of beauty?
Here are some pics of the celebrities I feel that have great womanly bodies who look truly Posh.
Think about these details prior to you go for a weight loss surgery.
Advantages
· Patient recovers from elevated levels of blood sugar. Risks similar to heart attacks or cancer decreases.
· Patients reject weight through the initial 18 to 24-month phase. Factual, some weight will tend to return, but a balanced diet or workout routine can resolve this.
Disadvantages
· The surgery can include complications like unusual hernias or prolonged stomach infections.
· Lacking proper chewing, food particles in stomach can get prolonged. So patient may suffer nausea or sickness.
· A large number of health insurance won’t cover weight loss surgeries.

Michelle Williams stayed in London for the London Fashion Week, cause you do know that her Broadway show has wrapped?
Michelle Williams was seen at the Ashish show, she wore a cute coral tiered Jenny Packham dress and sunshine yellow peep-toes. Sorry Michelle but this designer dress looks waaayy hotter on the model then on you! The sad part is that you’re NOT a model and you look skinnier then the actual model wearing this dress. Ugh! Disgusting! Oh yeah I forgot all of the $$ you made with Destiny’s Child is gone since you were a replacement. Which means you barely have income to survive let alone eat!
We all want to lose weight and feel great. But how can we make our desire a reality? One reason why people don’t lose weight is because they think that they are doing enough exercise when they actually are not reaching the necessary calorie burn level. Major lifestyle changes require upheaval from normal routines. It is important for your entire body to exercise regularly. With regards to eating, diets based on nutritious foods with similar calories, but with the ratio of fat, carbohydrates, and protein varied by food group, seem to be the most successful. Food items are grouped together, allowing you to glance at the calorie count of a meal you’re creating from fresh ingredients.
Keep in mind that eating foods without carbohydrates, skipping fats, adding more protein, or consuming only good fats can lead to weight loss. Make sure you understand that you’ll do more damage to your diet efforts by skipping meals. Foods that are high in fat and sugar are not good for a successful diet strategy. The critical time to intervene to prevent the development of obesity is during the pre-school years and in early adolescence.
Fat camps are expensive, and often are not covered by insurance. As gratifying as this accomplishment is, often following bariatric surgery and resulting weight loss, skin does not shrink to firmly fit the new, smaller frame. You must keep watching your weight. If possible, stick to your diet. Fat plays a critical role in many of the processes our bodies go through each and every day. With the increased popularity of bariatric surgery procedures such as Lap-Band surgery and gastric bypass surgery, there are many alternatives. Despite this, you can have a healthy lifestyle and maintain a lean body.
Abdominal fat cells may also affect the healthy functioning of the liver. So, if you are carrying any extra fat, your body begins to produce an immune response similar to the reaction your body exhibits when you develop the flu or have an injury. While static stretching is good for muscle tension, it may not be best for an athlete where more power and speed is necessary.
Here are a few suggestions to help you be a healthy role model for your kids: Practice portion control—whether it’s in a restaurant or at home, check out the food on your plate and consider that your stomach is only about the size of your fist. Within a few months, lose 40 pounds and get your blood sugar levels down. Fat cells are critical for survival and help assist the body’s energy system. There are many different obstacles and challenges in weight loss, some of them of which are out of your control. As gratifying as this accomplishment is, often following bariatric surgery and resulting weight loss, skin does not shrink to firmly fit the new, smaller frame. The best thing to do when trying to lose weight is to drink water, and lots of it. Check out established groups. The real goal is to lose weight and never gain it back.
Surgery to correct the effects of significant weight loss by performing a variety of body contouring procedures including liposuction, tummy tucks, arm lifts, and breast lifts. When estrogen levels are too high, testosterone levels are reduced, and many men experience fatigue, muscle tone loss, decreased sexual function, and in some cases, enlarged prostates. The following among family, friends, acquaintances, and former nutrition clients including a diabetic lady who has received diabetes counseling.
Educate your whole family—a book or a class on food and nutrition will help you stay on track. There has been debate on whether or not static stretching before exercise is beneficial. A sure thing for any healthy diet. While science offers us much, we need to be aware not all studies are accurate or useful. Fat cells within the abdomen are metabolically more active than fat cells located in other areas of the body. The nutritional data of foods based on the weight of their components rather than serving size. You don’t have as much because that hunger has diminished. But when you gain weight, estrogen levels rise and other health problems occur. Given the growing problem with childhood obesity in many western societies, these findings are particularly important.
Intrinsic to The Bonfire Health Program is the premise that human beings experience their greatest health potential when exposed to the optimal environment. Our genes have been shaped over thousands of generations to require specific elements or nutrients in order to function optimally. These essential elements have been identified and documented by the best researchers in the fields of physiology, nutrition, psychology and genetics, among others. When these essential elements are provided consistently by our lifestyle choices and behavior patterns, cells function optimally.
Although our gene expression determines our physiology; our environment determines the expression of our genes. The science of Epigentics teaches us that our genes are subordinate to their internal and external environment. Your internal environment is determined by your behavior patterns in three domains of lifestyle choice: how you eat, how you move and how you think. When lifestyles are genetically congruent, man expresses better health. In other words, when we eat, move and think in ways that compliment rather than contradict our genetic requirements for optimal cell function, we experience optimal health. Therefore, health is the natural consequence of a genetically congruent lifestyle.
Conversely, when we eat, move and / or think in ways that are contrary to our innate design, we interfere with the natural expression of cell function. In other words, when we make choices that are at odds with our genetic design, we express sickness.
When we choose behavior patterns that are inherently toxic to our bodies, like poor food choices; or we neglect to include elements that are innately required for health, like exercise or adequate sleep, we interfere with the natural expression of health and get sick.
Your life is a path. Imagine that path is lined with cobblestones. When complete, a cobblestone path provides shore-footing and a stable journey. When stones are missing, you can expect an uneasy, bumpy ride. If the path is free and clear of debris, your walk is sure to be smooth and straight. If the road is littered with rubble, you will likely trip and fall. The essential elements that you choose to provide in your deliberate approach to your way of life are the cobblestones. Any toxic choices or behaviors that you choose to practice will clutter your path and cause you to stub your toe – or worse.
The Bonfire Health Program represents the definitive summary of the outcomes determined by the most current research on the essential elements that your cells require to express health. The best practices and vital behaviors recommended to ensure the provision of these elements are simple, but profound. And most importantly, the leverage of the science of social change infused throughout the program will guarantee you the greatest opportunity to get these behaviors into your life and sustain these changes. We help you do it – AND KEEP TO IT!
Stay tuned…

Well – I didn’t get all of the things done I wanted to do – BUT I did finally finish painting the wall around the back door. It’s the only damn wall in the house I need a ladder to do – and of course I need the TALL ladder. So it took longer than it should have because
I HATE ladders
I REALLY hate being on a tall ladder on a small landing at the top of the stairs
But it’s all done now – and the color is GORGEOUS! (Benjamin Moore #2146-20 Forest Moss). So nice to be seeing less of the damn dingy yellow.
I’d like to have the dining room/living room painted before the halloween bash, but there is SO much cleaning to do – I just don’t see the painting happening….
As for the weight loss – I basically spent the weekend binging on the pizza wagon… *grumble* but (and how many times will I have to say this) – I’m climbing back on the weight loss wagon and going to keep trying to move forward.
My “exercise” this weekend was hauling my fat ass up on and down that damn ladder a billion times – calves and knees are killing me. Pilates is rescheduled for Wednesday. On Friday I see the Evil Trainer (he’ll be back from hunting), and then it’s Pilates again on Saturday morning. Sometime between now and Friday I HAVE to swim for an hour. HAVE TO! Can’t report utter failure on my cardio promise to ET when I see him Friday… Make that I WILL NOT report failure on the cardio!

I have two front page stories that I wrote for next weeks paper. Plus about five others in the paper. I turned everything in on time, no stress. Prioritizing really helped, but I worked long hours. I managed my food intake, but I didn’t do any excercising. I did stay at 163 though. I’m looking forward to later in the week because we are going to MT for 5 days for a little family visit. It should be fun taking hikes, and all so I will get plenty of fresh air too. Yay.
First thing is first, yesterday was officially my three year anniversary of living in Colorado. This my friends is a feat in itself, a struggle along a very bumpy path. I have gone back and forth in my feelings for Colorado, and for Washington for that matter. At this point in time life is going pretty well and I have a wonderful path (of weight loss) that I am focusing on, that in this environment is working. I also have Mr. Gaunt here and that is quite nice. Im up in the air about my next step, and right now I am living in the moment and staying focused on me.
Next up Weight loss! I went to my meeting this morning before work and had a successful 2.2lb loss! Woohoo! That puts me at 45.2 overall, just a mere 4.8lbs aways from my Halloween goal of 50lbs! It would be so nice to hit that early. Most of my goals have come a little early but the 50lb goal is a HUGE one, right below 75lb (which in my head is the biggest goal which I hope to hit by January). So none the less Im going to continue to workout at the gym and eat well and go to my meetings and widdle away the weight. With the winter coming up I need to look into some warmer clothing especially a coat, but I would love to be down another 10lbs to go shopping for those, fingers crossed the weight loss comes before the snow.
Oh and last but not least Pizza! I worked late tonight so Mr. Gaunt made me this pizza. No recipe but the ingredients are Mozzarella, artichoke hearts, tomato, pesto, onions, spinach, spinach sausage (on half) and feta. Lordy was it delicious!
Want a more creative way to perform your cardio activity rather than on a stationary bike? Try spinning! This could be one of the most grueling cardio classes that you can take if trying to lose stomach fat.
The class usually takes place in the cardio room of your favorite gym. Some have been clever enough to even hold the classes outdoors to incorporate a sense of city and trail riding. The bikes you will ride are specially designed to simulate an outdoor biking adventure by having easily changeable tension controls to simulate hill riding. Though you will be stationary, spinning burns up to 450 calories in 45 minutes! And what makes 45 minutes go faster but upbeat music and constant encouragement from your instructor.
The whole idea is to pretend you are riding outdoors, dealing with the normal challenges of hill riding without the danger of falling or being hit by a road-raged motorist. Not only does spinning burn lots of calories, it also tones the quadriceps muscles and the muscles of the hips as well. One major drawback of riding a bike outdoors is the tremendous amount of balance and coordination that is required. Not in a spinning class! Since the bike is stationary, all you have to do is concentrate on following the course described to you by your instructor. Increasing the tension knob simulates hills.
Well I made all my workouts this week and now I’m off to my friends to help her move and then go out and have a few drinks. The moving will be a workout all it’s own. Who knows if we will have the energy to go out tonight. We won’t have to chase the kids around because mine will be at home with her daddy, and hers will be at there dad’s house. It’s a mommy break weekend. I love my daughter dearly! It is also nice to have a day away just to be able to do adult things like have a drink with my friend, have a conversation with out being interrupted by, “mommy, mommy, MOMMY.” Meeting the demands of a child is sometime overwhelming. She is three now, and she knows what she wants and she wants it now. I am trying to teach her patience but she doesn’t fully grasp the concept yet. Also think as adults we want everything now too. Hence all the issues going on in the economy, not to get to far off track. I think that’s why it’s hard for people to lose weight to. They just expect it to come right off. I’m guilty of it too. I was disappointed in my first weeks weight loss of 2 pounds. I worked so hard, I wanted it to be like 10 pounds, almost setting myself up for disappointment. I worked through it quickly and realized that it was 2 pounds less then the week before and that is was still progress. We all put to many expectations on life and are devastated, or mad, when they don’t work out exactly as expected. Just have a plan as a guideline because things always come up. Well I’ve got to go, have a great Saturday!
Looking for a clever way to reduce your intake of fat and calories that will have you eating more nutrient-rich foods? Donald Katz, MD, recommends making half of every meal consist of fruits or vegetables. For example, at breakfast fill your bowl half-way with cereal and then top if off with peaches and blueberries. Try doing this at each meal, and you’ll reduce the fat and calories (as long as you don’t add high-calorie toppings).

1770 Calories, according to WebMD. Also according to them I should be losing 1 pound per day by eating the way I have been lately. I am not.
I have been having some good days lately though. Yesterday we went to the fair. Walked and walked, and my legs still remember. We took a walk when we came home too, just because it was so pretty out. Don’t you just love these beautiful fall days?
It’s so much prettier now than it was when it was way too extra hot this summer. Sure, it’s sunny but does that mean better? No.
Not always.
Today I lay out on the yardswing with my little sister and looked at the sky…
It was that indescribably wonderfully beautiful blue that only comes around this time of year. It’s like you can get lost in it, just looking forever and forgetting life in general.
Of course I did come back to life and it was lovely. We watched Halloween kids movies, getting ready for the holiday, and sat around with our crazy little cats.
I also got to go out and do photographs of one of my beautiful little second-cousins today, and she was quite the model. She even seemed to pose a couple of times, but I put it down to coincidence since she’s only 2 months old.
I hope you all had as good a day as I did. I know tonight before bed most of my prayers are Thanks.
I haven’t been as diligent with posting on here. Between work and school both kicking my butt, and my other blog that I write on, this one’s fallen by the wayside.
I was thrilled to see a couple days ago that I am now at 160 pounds and holding. Three pounds less than the last time I checked. One pound away from being in the 150’s again. Oh how I’d love to see that!
There are several things that I think have attributed to this weight loss. First, my period ended. That always adds some extra poundage. Second, I really think being on the go and crazy stressed with work and school has boosted my metabolism and possibly kept me from finding time to snack. But, I also think the stress has caused me to get sick, which sometimes also keeps the pounds off. I personally thing it’s just a sinus thing, but it’s also keeping from the gym today which I’m not happy about.
But all in all, I think the main thing that has been helping is I am finally really taking note of what I eat AND the calorie intake. I’ve been making a huge conscious effort to keep within 1500 calories per day, and working out 4-5 times a week.
It’s the good old fashioned, tried and true, slow but steady, somewhat difficult way. But, it works. Diet and exercise. Watching your calories and portions. Being active. It works and I need to keep it up!
I gotta say when it comes to losing weight I am horrible. I have no will power whatsoever. It sucks, because I want to lose weight, but I hate doing all you have to do in order to do it. After seeing other people talk about this weight watchers thing I’m giving it a try. Let me give you a little rundown of my situation. I weight roughly 215 pounds, which is a little overweight for me. I’m about 6 feet 1 inch so I figure I should be around 180. To achieve this I’m going to need to lose at least 2pounds per week. This, more or less, gives me about the rest of 2009 to achieve this goal. Can I do it? Who knows, but I’m willing to give it a shot. So here’s to losing weight and hopefully actually doing it this time. I guess only time will tell if I can keep this up. Here’s hoping…
Some of the smartest ways to easy weight loss are by just simply increasing your activity levels and decreasing the number of calories you take in. It takes three and a half thousand calories to add 1 lb of weight so to lose that pound you just need to get rid of the same amount.
Don’t forget that it isn’t an either or situation. You can choose to both cut down & burn off to get rid of those calories. In fact if you simply walk a little further each day as well as cutting out 1 can of soda each day you’ll very easily lose 117 calories each day.
Over thirty days 117 calories less means you will lose 1 lb – more than likely without even realising! Just that one very easy idea means you will lose around one stone in weight in the course of|in a year.
It’s easy to forget, you didn’t put all your extra weight on overnight so don’t think you will lose it overnight either. Slow and steady will bring you greater success in the long run – and you won’t have the misery of being hungry!
Oh yes, it’s a real club and our first meeting is on Tuesday, October 6th. We’re a pretty elite club – we boast some of the BIGGEST LOSERS on this side of town. Of course, you can only be a loser to join. However, some good news – we are currently on the hunt for new members!
Yes, you heard right – we are opening our doors to those who are “FED UP”. (In our experience, those with the most to lose become the most active members.) Think of the October 6th meeting as a “try out” session. For those of you with enough courage to come – we look forward to meeting you.
As an added bonus, you will have the opportunity to meet our fearless leader, President of The Losers’ Club, the biggest loser of them all – Stephanie Solaris!
Double entendres and witticisms aside, Stephanie will be teaching a class on permanent weight loss: how to lose weight and how to keep it off after you’ve lost it. Join in on the discussion and fun! For more information, click here. (Fall 2009 Brochure, listing #45, page 12.)

so I have been absent and not posting. I missed post the last two tuesday weigh ins.
This last tuesday i didn’t bother weighing in. I knew the scale was going to be up because I spent the week binging on junk. The week before I had gained some weigh back.
I have dusted myself off and have hit the so called restart button.
I have been back to tracking a two whole days now. I even accounted for the splurging of points I had at dinner tonight. try as I might I just like cream sauce on my pasta and bread-sticks. so needless to say but I now have to stay withint my daily points as I am out of all the extra 35 weekly points.

A few weeks back I discussed the inconsistency of weight loss and how tough it can be mentally. Work hard every day, eat perfect and some how the weight does nothing.
Last week I returned from vacation an astonishing 7 lbs lighter than when I left. I weighed in a 241 when I left and returned 234! This was a huge step in the right direction and I was super stoked. But a weird thing happened shortly there after. Thinking I could skip the 230’s all together I went big on my next 4 work outs. When I got on the scale two days later I weighed 243. This is 9 lbs higher than my previous of 234 and also 2lbs higher than my original pre vacation weight of 241.
WHAT IS HAPPENING!!!!!!! I spent all week in the gym, sweating my ass off and eating perfect….How on earth did I gain the weight back? The final straw was the mental abuse I took this week trying to get back to 234. All week my weight did nothing, 243, 242, 243, 241…I’m thinking, what the heck is going on. I even complained to my trainer about it on Tuesday at our workout session. I was sick and tired of working hard and not seeing results. Was my body adjusting to my routine? Am I getting so old that it’s virtually impossible to loose weight? Was I going to be 240 forever? All of these thoughts were creeping in my mind.
Then a change. On Wed, I got on the scale and it said 238! Yes. Then Thursday it said 236! Finally…My body is adjusting again. I can loose the weight…. My body will adjust….IT IS a rollercoaster….. Success will be mine after all. You cannot image the pure joy I felt seeing the scale move again. It continues to reaffirm everything I am working towards.
Remember, your body works like a yo-yo. Sometimes, the yo-yo gets caught at the bottom. It just needs to a little extra force to get it moving again.
Losing weight is much the same. Stay with it, stay focused and the results will happen!

So, in my first post I preached ‘trying new things’ and I carried on about how I was going to start writing all the time in my amazing new blog. Well, it’s been over two weeks and I have yet to post anything. Sad day. So tonight I thought it was time for a post. I want to talk about setting goals. I clearly have some issues with goal setting but rather than declaring myself completely incompetent, I’m going to go through with the post and in the process, talk about someone who is actually good at setting goals (and even better at following through with them).
This person is my boyfriend Seth. He is such a driven person—the kind that can wake up one day and be like, “I’m going to get straight A’s from now on” or “I’m going to lose 60 pounds” or “I feel like a career change, I think I’ll become a nurse.” All of these examples are things that Seth has suddenly decided to do and then he just does it like it’s no biggie. Of these examples, I am most astonished by his weight loss goal. He started losing weight before we were even friends. He ran every day and drastically cut his daily calorie intake. When we first started dating (a little over a year ago) he had lost about half of his goal weight. To this day, he has lost around 60 pounds. This evening I looked through some old pictures of him on Facebook and I couldn’t believe how drastically different he looks.
Seth's BEFORE and AFTER
I really can’t believe how good he looks. Most importantly, I can’t believe how dedicated he is to keeping the weight off. He jogs, goes to the Y almost daily, counts calories like its going out of style, and tries to avoid eating a lot of junk food. I can’t say he’s perfect because he is a fat kid at heart and loves to pig out on greasy fast food now and then. But luckily, he has mastered the art of portion control.
Weight loss isn’t the only goal that Seth has set for himself but I know that for him it has been the hardest to achieve. He is one of those people who says they will do something and then they dedicate every part of themselves into doing that single thing. Amazingly enough, he also puts this same amount of dedication into other important things in his life and that’s what makes him such a great person. He doesn’t get a lot of recognition for the things he does (especially from me) so let this be just that.
Is anyone else as excited as I am that the newest season of the Biggest Loser premiered tonight?! I’m so happy! The new season (season 8!) was exactly the kick-in-the-butt I needed to get back on track after my indulgent weekend. I was so motivated while watching, that I got down on my living room floor and started doing push ups! In fact, I did multiple sets of push ups, leg lifts, squats and lunges! And during the commercial breaks (I was too impatient to build up some “slack” on my DVR) I bounced on my rebounder! It turned into a full circuit workout!
I am feeling newly motivated to re-commit myself to the Clean Program. I am in some major need of some detox (again, from my bad weekend) and have a wedding in, gulp, 24 days!! That gives me just enough time to squeeze in the full 21-day Clean program to help me look and feel my VERY BEST on my wedding day!
After my last fitting, I’m comfortable in how I fit in my wedding dress, but I would love to have glowing hair and skin, and I want to feel light and energized– which I think the Clean program will do for me. I have a background of having TERRIBLE acne as a teenager (that was completely CURED by Accutane– which I used as a very last resort, mind you), however I still get occasional blemishes that I would like to avoid at all costs on my wedding day! So hopefully the Clean program will get this junk out of my system, and get me on track for a stress-free wedding day.
I apologize ahead of time for all of my wedding talk. I did not expect to be one of those brides who talks about her wedding day all the time! I do think I’ve managed to avoid doing it for most of our engagement, but as it’s getting down to the nitty gritty, it’s truly occupying all of my thoughts! Perhaps it’s because we have a mere 3 weeks left, and we still haven’t booked our honeymoon yet?!! Yipes!!!!! I swear, I’m doing it TOMORROW! (did I mention I’m a bit of a procrastinator?) Ha ha.
I know I’ve tried doing this Clean program a million times now, but I have no excuses this time. This time, I have a good two-and-a-half weeks of NO TRAVELING! Wahoo! I used to think I would love to have a job that lets me travel– now I realize how hard it is to travel and eat healthy! It’s very difficult to keep up a regular routine! But the hope of having pretty wedding pictures is a good motivator, and there is no time left for diet slip-ups! I’m committed.
I’ll post my daily meals/juices, and my (hopeful) weight loss as I go! I’ve got a good feeling this time.
A new habit I am going to start working on is going to bed earlier! I’ve read in magazines and other sources that not getting enough sleep can derail weight loss and even cause a weight gain. Here are a couple articles I just found http://bit.ly/2z48Z6, and http://bit.ly/RBF11 enjoy. Right now I think I may get only 2 or 3 full night sleep a week, meaning 7.5 hours or so. With a snoring husband and a 3 year old who comes running for our bed at least once a week it’s hard to get that full nights sleep. Even when I get to sleep in on the weekends, I still stay up to late, and it’s not a solid sleep. I’m a night owl and I enjoy staying up late watching movies when everyone is in bed. I still get woken up by my daughter or the noises of the morning: cereal bowls, the shower or the TV. So starting tonight I am going make an effort to be in bed and asleep before 11pm which will give me at least 7.5 hours of sleep. Now I just need to get my daughter to sleep before 9pm, she’s a night owl just like me. And I need to stop staying up to watch TV, that’s what the DVR is for! To everyone sweet dreams and a good night sleep!
I was really nervous about weighing myself this morning. I wondered how it would feel if I’d put in all of the efforts and, by virtue of this blog, made myself vulnerable to the judgment of others, and the scale hadn’t budged. Well, I still wonder about that and will likely have a chance to find out some week. This time, though, I can celebrate the shedding of two pounds. Yay! Only 38 to go!
I’ve felt really excited today about this in a way that I don’t remember feeling the other times I’ve intentionally worked on weight loss. It’s a really amazing feeling.
As I was walking today, I kept holding my vision about being healthy, fit, and having a lighter, smaller body. I imagined myself feeling really sexy again. And, I could really feel myself being that vision. That made me even more excited because the gurus I study (mostly James Ray and Wayne Dyer) emphasize the importance of thoughts, feelings, and actions when they’re talking about achieving goals and dreams. As James Rays says, I was “going 3 for 3″ today.
I also heard something helpful today from Louise Hay of Hay House Radio. During the commercial breaks from the on-line streaming of their shows, Louise offers affirmations. Today she suggested holding a thought that was something like “I release my need for carrying this excess weight.” I felt as though she was speaking directly to me. While I feel that I’ve begun a very successful endeavor, I know that I am not aware of all of the reasons that my body is holding excess weight at this time. Weight loss is not always as simple as calories in versus calories out. Hormone function has a role and emotions have a role in hormone function and unconcious thoughts and beliefs have a role in emotions. Consciously affecting that complex system is much harder to do than conscously affecting my weight through choices about food and exercise. I also know that I feel some fear when I think about shedding pounds. I can literally feel it in my gut. Those excess pounds are serving as protection in a way that I am not yet consciously aware of.
Still, I release my need for carrying this excess weight. Breathe and release the fear. And think again, I release my need for carrying this excess weight. And so it is. (Or for my pagan friends, so mote it be.)
Well I’m still losing weight but it’s going soooo slowly. Last week it was 2.2 pounds and this week it was 3.6 pounds. I just don’t understand why it’s going so slowly. It’s really very discouraging. I feel like I could lose this amount of weight on something like weight watchers and actually get to eat food. I know that I need to start excersizing but I’m always so tired and hungry add in school and work and I just don’t have the time or energy. I was expecting to lose about 5 pounds a week and that is just not happening. It’s crazy to step on the scale day after day and not see the number budge AT ALL. Especially when you haven’t eaten a single thing. UGH!
Dallas, TX Boot Camp and Personal Trainer Tip of the Week: Combat Weight Gain Due to Hormone Imbalances
www.GetYouInShape.com personal trainer Julie McCan with the Tip of the Week
Hormone imbalances can have a great impact on weight – both in gaining weight and efforts to lose it. My goal through this week’s tip is to try and simplify your understanding of how hormone imbalances come about and what you can do to correct or prevent it from happening.
Why understanding hormone imbalances is important
Typically and in an optimal state, hormones work in perfect harmony together to help keep your body running smoothly and healthy. When just one hormone is out of balance, it can cause all sorts of problems. Many times these imbalances can and often do lead to weight gain.
As a person that has dealt with weight gain, I know the challenges of trying to shed unwanted pounds and keep them off. When losing weight would finally become a priority for me, I would work really hard to try and lose weight using previously tried successful methods. However, as I got older, previous diets would not work for me and just seemed to be harder and harder to lose the pounds.
When I retired in April of 2007, focusing on my overall health and wellness became a priority for me. I was determined to get in shape and lose weight once and for all! In addition, as a woman rapidly approaching my 50’s, I know I am going to face even more challenges as the menopause years loom ahead of me.
About this same time, I also started listening more closely to the troubles other women faced as they aged and struggled with weight gain. “It must be hormone related” was the common response I heard to “Why can’t I lose weight?” Hearing these comments combined with my own issues, got me interested in learning more about the role women’s hormones play in weight gain and more importantly, what we can do to lose the weight.
Hormones: Simplified (I hope!)
Our bodies produce many hormones, but there are three hormones in particular that play a key role in aging and weight gain: Insulin, stress (adrenaline and cortisol are the primary stress hormones), and estrogen hormones.
Insulin plays a huge role within our bodies as it relates to metabolism and body fat. Its main job is to regulate the absorption of sugar (or glucose) into our body’s cells. Glucose is our body’s primary source of energy or “fuel” and is needed to perform any physical task. What we put into our bodies makes a big difference on how well insulin can perform its function.
Sugar gets in our bodies through carbohydrates (carbs). Foods in their natural state, (such as fruits, vegetables and whole grains) are the “good carbs”. “Bad carbs” are those foods that are refined and processed. Typically, most of the nutritional value has been stripped from these foods. When are diets regularly consist of bad carbs, over time this type of eating behavior can lead to a condition known as insulin resistance. “When you are insulin resistant your body converts every calorie it can into fat — even if you’re dieting. And it won’t let you burn fat when you exercise.”¹
The type of food we eat isn’t the only thing that can disrupt the balance of our hormones. Stress hormones kick into high gear when our bodies perceive some type of external threat. A threat can be anything from stubbing your toe to a blow to the head. As soon as your body perceives a threat, stress hormones block off or suppress many processes within our bodies, including our digestive process. When we experience a prolonged state of stress, our system goes into what is sometimes referred to as the “famine effect”: “despite adequate food, the body interprets prolonged stress as a famine, and once again, the body thinks it should store every spare calorie as fat.”¹
Everyone has stress in their life. How we deal with it determines whether or not our stress hormones become imbalanced.
Natural changes women go through in our lives do not always cause a hormone imbalance. However, as we age, the estrogen hormone that is produced in a woman’s ovaries, begin to produce less and less. During this slowed production time, our body naturally looks for someplace else to produce estrogen, such as within other organs, our skin or guess what? Body fat! Yes, our fat cells can produce estrogen.
If a woman carries extra body fat, in particular in their belly, the situation often becomes exacerbated because these now estrogen producing fat cells have even more reason to stay put! Even more worrisome is that excessive estrogen production is linked to an increased risk of heart disease, diabetes and some types of cancer. The same risks that is found in people that carry too much weight around their bellies! See the connection?
How to fight back and return your hormones to perfect harmony
Hopefully you see the connection these hormones have and their importance to our ability to fight the spread of our middle as we age. Given our lifestyles today, it is no wonder our hormones are out of balance. The access to fast foods and easy quick meals is too convenient. Couple a bad diet with the daily stress we all face in trying to juggle families, careers, spouses and a social life. Even if we do have a good handle on these two areas of our life, no woman can stop the aging clock. It’s no wonder so many adult women feel they are in a no win situation in their struggle with weight gain.
Alas, there is hope! But, you have to be willing to make some changes. The two main things you can do to help restore the balance of your hormones are a focus on good nutrition and adding exercise to your life. (Coincidentally, these are the basic foundations of the GetYouInShapeProgram).
First, focus on a healthy diet. One that consists of lean meat, low-fat dairy, whole grains, lots of veggies and fruits as well as healthy oils and minimized alcohol intake.
By simply changing what you put in your body, you will immediately begin to see changes in how you feel. You will have more energy, (which will allow you to deal with your stress better), you will most likely sleep better, (adding further to your energy level) and you may even start to lose weight! By putting good calories in your body, your insulin will quit converting the calories to fat and allow your body to begin burning calories.
Second and very simply put – just move! Start walking. Dance around the house. Stretch. Join a gym. Buy some inexpensive workout DVD’s. Come to a free Boot Camp session! Just do something. Start with 10 minutes a day and gradually add 5 minutes to your day. You don’t have to exercise all at once either. Break it up throughout the day. Whenever you can get 10 minutes in. However, eventually try to get in at least 30 minutes per day.
By adding exercise to your daily routine combined with a healthy diet you will begin to see a change in how you feel and your overall appearance. Give it time though. Those extra pounds didn’t appear in just 2 weeks or a month, so don’t expect to lose it all in that amount of time. Expect to lose 1 to 2 pounds per week and in no time, you will have the results you have been wanting.

First before we get into weight loss I want to share a meal, because well I love to take pictures of food and Mr. Gaunt was the chef tonight which always makes me happy.
I bought Whole Wheat Panko Breadcrumbs a few weeks ago at Whole Foods, and have wanted to use them but hadnt gotten around to it. It can be hard to find a Panko crusted recipe that doesnt intail a vat of oil to deep fry (hommie doesnt deep fry). So tonight after work Mr. Gaunt pulled this out of the oven:
He said he used Tilapia lightly sprayed with I Cant Believe Its Not Butter, then coated with Panko (including piling a little on top when its in the pan) and baked it in the oven. Then he sauted fresh spinach, onions, cherry tomatoes and a little light feta as a fish bed. Oh it was sooo yummy. totally fixed my evening veggie craving and any Fish and Chips needs too!
Ok moving on to weight loss, I finally dragged my ass to a Weight Watchers meeting down here in Littleton. It was interesting going to a new meeting, especially without Pro. Anyways things went well, I lost 2.4 lbs, which sounds good unless you realize thats for 2 weeks…ugg. Oh well, after yesterday’s birthday splurge, Im back on track and creeping closer to 50 lbs lost every day!
You’ve made the decision to lose weight as quickly as possible. You have your diet in place and you expect to follow it religiously. At this point, you may be wondering how much weight you can lose in a given week and whether fast weight loss can be dangerous for your body.
There are a number of things that can affect your weight loss. For instance, family history, or genetics, can play a significant role. Also, your weight loss may depend upon how much exercise you’re engaging in, as well as how much stress you are under. Your metabolism, or how quickly you burn calories, can also have a major effect.
Theoretically, you could lose as much as 20 pounds a week. However, much of that weight could be water weight. That means that, once you go off your diet, you are likely to gain much of that weight back. Also, unless you engage in strength training, you will be losing muscle as well as fat, since about ¼ of the body’s weight consists of muscle. It is interesting to note that, at most, you can probably lose four pounds of fat in a given week.
Nature has a way of protecting the body against excessive weight loss. If, for instance, your calorie count suddenly drops, your body will compensate for the fact by reducing your metabolic rate. As a result, you’ll need fewer calories to maintain your weight. This explains why some people lose weight up to a point and then cannot lose any additional weight, no matter how hard they try.
If you lose weight quickly, there’s a good chance that your health will be jeopardized. For instance, fast weight loss has been linked to the appearance of gall stones. Also, you may experience loose skin as your weight goes into free fall. Perhaps most distressing of all, if you experience rapid weight loss, there’s a good chance that you will gain the weight back again. This is because it is very difficult to maintain a healthy diet regimen. You may find yourself falling back into your bad eating habits after a period of deprivation.
Fast weight loss also places you at greater risk for an eating disorder. You may be tempted to starve yourself, leading to anorexia. Or, because your food cravings are so great, you may want to binge and purge, leading to a case of bulimia. This is why it is so critically important to lose weight under a physician’s care. Otherwise, you could be doing more harm to your body than good.
Although the body has the capability of shedding a great deal of weight over a period of time, most medical experts agree that one should not expect to lose more than one or two pounds a week in order to remain healthy. This can be disappointing to a dieter, especially one that needs to lose about 50 pounds. However, doctors believe that the go-slow approach is best for long-term weight loss. Otherwise, you could end up with a number of health problems you weren’t anticipating.
There are a number of approaches you can use to lose weight. For instance, you might follow the Atkins plan, the Zone, or the diabetic diet. You might try Sugar Busters or the Carb Addict’s prescription for losing weight. However, it is vitally important that you accompany your diet plan with an effective exercise routine. One of the best exercises you can do, in fact, is the easiest—walking. It has been said that you can lose as many as two pounds a week, just by walking alone.
As has been demonstrated here, rapid weight loss should be approached with caution. It is far better to lose a few pounds each week and maintain that weight loss over the long term. In essence, all good things take time, and that is particularly true when it comes to weight loss. Perhaps the best advice is to be patient. Follow a reasonable diet, get plenty of exercise, and drink a good amount of water. That way, you should be able to slowly lose weight—without jeopardizing your health in the process.
